HOW TO CARE FOR CERAMICS

Discover how to clean and maintain ceramic objects. Since careless or rough handling is one of the most common causes of damage to ceramics, handle the pieces as little as possible. Most ceramics can be handled without gloves, as long as hands are clean and dry. Remove jewellery that might scratch, such as watches, bracelets or rings.

To fully enjoy your ceramic objects, please follow a few basic rules:

  • Place ceramic vases and lamp bases on felt pads.
  • Do not use a dishwasher to clean valued ceramics.
  • Avoid lifting ceramic objects by any parts that stick out, such as finials and figures.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE

Avoid using acidic cleaning agents or household bleaches because they can cause irreversible damage. Abrasive creams and cleaners will damage delicate decoration or dull the glaze.

When cleaning a ceramic lamp base, make sure you unplug the power cord first. Then remove the bulb and the lampshade. While cleaning the lamp base, make sure no water or other liquid is spilled in the lamp socket. (Polish metal finished parts with products that are made specifically for the care of polished metals).

Clean the ceramic object with lukewarm water, a pH-neutral sulphate-free cleaner, and a soft sponge or wash cloth. Avoid loofa’s, scrub brushes and other materials that could scratch the glaze. Test clean a small area to make sure you won’t damage the surface, before cleaning the whole object. Often the effect is not noticeable until the object has dried.

When the ceramic surface is profiled, use appropriate cleaning pads or soft brushes to dislodge the dirt in recesses. Make sure that the cleaning agent is completely removed by a final rinsing with clean water. Dry the surface after washing with a soft cloth or chamois.
